Grilled cheese sandwiches are fun for kids to make! While they can be extremely simple in nature, they can also become quite a creative cooking project when using an interesting variety of ingredients. This is one of my favorite classes to teach because the kids get super creative with their sandwich masterpieces.
To start the class, I reviewed the basics of making a grilled cheese sandwich and then went over the ingredient choices they had available. Next, I gave the class a few guidelines to start with. Each jr. chef got an index card on which they had to come up with a grilled cheese concept, an ingredient list, and a sandwich name. When they were done with that, I reviewed it with them and then they had to gather and prep all of the ingredients before starting to cook. I had two cast iron pans and a waffle maker for cooking the sandwiches in. I made myself available by stove to assist in cooking and flipping. After each one was cooked, the kids also had to decide how to plate their grilled cheese. Last, they had to present their creations to the class. Overall it was super successful and I think the kids were very proud of their work!
Here's some of the selection of ingredients I had available for the kids to use....
cheeses- sharp cheddar, provolone, mozzarella, gouda, american
meat- Virginia ham, smoked turkey, salami, pepperoni
bread- multigrain loaf, italian, baguette
produce- tomatoes, green onions, avocados, basil, baby spinach, strawberries, green apples,
condiments and spices- salt, pepper, chili powder, red pepper flakes, barbecue sauce
